Alfred Herbert arrived in Coventry during 1887 as a twenty one year old, newly qualified engineer and proceeded to build the largest machine tool company in Europe with sales agencies worldwide. His company ALFRED HERBERT LTD. Was synonymous with the design and manufacture of high quality production machinery and workshop equipment, and as a marketing outlet for the majority of other leading machine and tooling manufacturers of the time.

The present HERBERT GROUP was founded in 1985 with the formation of HERBERT DRILLING MACHINES COVENTRY LTD. to continue production of the Alfred Herbert range of drilling and tapping machines. Steady growth through the 1980’s saw the acquisition of ACKWORTHIE MACHINE TOOLS LTD. and the ARCHER branded range of products (formerly supplied by Jacobs of Sheffield). The extensive product base was futher increased during the 1990’s by the addition of HERBERT TOOLING LTD. and the JAY-DEE range of tapping chucks.

Supply of spares, refurbishment and on site repairs of the Alfred Herbert selection of Capstan and Combination Turret Lathes has also been added to the groups activities under the HERBERT EQUIPMENT section.
